The area directly opposite the infamous Colleville draw – codenamed E3 in the Allied plans – is Fox Green. Situated directly east of “Easy Red” this is the area where a number of landing boats carrying assault troops de
signated for Easy Red actually landed. The reason for this is the strong current at Omaha Beach which messed up the careful planning. Unfortunately this meant that already dazed and confuses seasick troops landed not in the relative safety of the area between the German Widerstandsneste but directly opposite the strongest of the German fortifications: Widerstandsneste 61 and 62.
These two german widerstandsneste guarded the crucial Colleville draw and especially WN62 was one of the most formidable strongpoints the German army constructed in Normandy. It housed several AT-Guns and a number of Mortar and Maching Gun emplacements. Furthermore it was in direct contact with inland artillery batteries functionins as a forward artillery observation post.
